Details

Our Sharps online training course will highlight just what the risks are, what the law says, and what practices you and your employer can adopt to help reduce the chances of a sharps accident.

'Sharps' are needles, blades (such as scalpels) and other medical instruments that are necessary for carrying out healthcare work and could cause an injury by cutting or pricking the skin.

Within the medical industry, sharps injuries rank among the most common injuries for both staff and patients. In the UK there are approximately 100,000 sharps injuries every year.

Sharps injuries are a well-known risk in the health and social care sector. Sharps contaminated with an infected patient's blood can transmit more than 20 diseases, including hepatitis B, C and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Because of this transmission risk, sharps injuries can cause worry and stress to the many thousands who receive them.

Legislation

Health and safety law applies to risks from sharps injuries, just as it does to other risks from work activities. Relevant legislation includes:

  • Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.
  • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) 2002.
  • Management of Health and Safety Regulations 1999.
  • Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR).
The Health and Safety (Sharp Instruments in Healthcare) Regulations 2013

These Regulations only apply to employers, contractors and workers in the healthcare sector. NHS Trusts/Boards, independent healthcare businesses and other employers whose main activity is the management, organisation and provision of healthcare will be subject to the 'Sharps Regulations'.
