What is this course about?
This course is designed to develop your knowledge and understanding of the English Language. If English is your first language this is probably the most important basic qualification to have to enhance your employability and to support further study in a large range of subjects.

What topics will I study?
You will develop your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. You will also conduct some reading research choosing from a selection of topics and use this to inform your written work. Study Areas are:
Reading of non-fiction and autobiographical writing;
Article Writing;
Commentary writing;
Writing for different audiences and purposes, including writing to describe, argue and persuade.

How will my work be assessed?
You will be assessed by an examination at the end of the year and by a coursework folder of written work and speaking and listening assessments.

What skills and interests do I need beforehand to be a successful applicant for this course?
Ability to draw on your English skills in reading, speaking and listening. What skills will I need to develop during the course to succeed? You will need to build on and develop your English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

What are the lessons like?
Lessons include group work and individual work as well as discussions. Coursework may also be completed in lessons.

What have I got to do in order to do well?
Make sure you attend each lesson and keep up to date with class and homework. Participate in lessons in order to get the most out of them and act on feedback from your teacher.

What do people do with English iGCSE?
All university courses, many college courses, as well as many employers require you to have a minimum standard (often grade C) in GCSE English.

To be successful you will normally need a grade D in English GCSE or equivalent to enrol on this course, or demonstrate relevant knowledge or skills. We will be happy to meet you to discuss your application, as necessary.
