What is this course about?
The course provides an understanding of the world around you from a scientific perspective. It looks at the three sciences, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. It uses your everyday experience as a starting point and builds up to more complex scientific ideas.
What topics will I study?
We study a large range of topics from balanced diets to evolution in Biology, making plastics to the nitrogen cycle in Chemistry and heating houses to the Universe in Physics
Do I need to buy textbooks beforehand?
It is useful to buy the textbook and revision guide for the course. The textbook can be bought here.
How will my work be assessed?
There is a practical assessment during the year and then two exams in May/June.
What skills and interests do I need beforehand to be a successful applicant for this course?
Most students take the course to further their career and develop an interest in science during the course! What skills will I need to develop during the course to succeed? Time management, note writing and research skills.
What are the lessons like?
Lots of discussion, questions and answer sessions, videos, and use of the textbook.
What have I got to do in order to do well?
Make sure you attend each lesson and keep up to date with class and homework. Participate in lessons in order to get the most out of them and act on feedback from your teacher. Keep your notes up to date, ask if there is anything you don’t understand and practice past papers.
What do people do with GCSE Science?
Go onto careers in teaching or healthcare.
To be successful you will normally need a grade D in Science GCSE or equivalent to enrol on this course, or demonstrate relevant knowledge or skills. We will be happy to meet you to discuss your application, as necessary.
