Who is it for?
This course is ideal for both writers just starting on short film work and more experienced screenwriters. Beginners will take away a rounded understanding of how to approach penning short films, and veteran writers could see writing in a whole new light.
Outline
Unlike sequential models, which focus on a series of steps a story is presumed to pass through as it unfolds, Richard Raskin's approach is based on the view that short film storytelling can best be described in terms of opposing properties that balance one another in a dynamic interplay.
Seven forms of interplay or balance will be proposed, each illustrated by a short film which will be shown in its entirety.
By the end of the course, students ought to be able to:
- Use Richard Raskin's model as a set of guidelines during script development for short fiction films.
- Use the model as a way of understanding how the best short fiction films tell their stories.
- Have a clearer understanding of how to begin, write and finish their short film idea.

Journal of Philosophy, The Canadian Journal of Film Studies, Asian Cinema, and a journal he founded and edited for many years, P.O.V.– A Danish Journal of Film Studies.
A frequent lecturer on the short film at festivals and film schools, he has served as jury president at inter¬national festivals in France, Belgium, India, Holland and Denmark. Short films based on his screenplays have been funded by New Danish Screen, and one of those films has won numerous awards, including the Grand Prize at the biggest short film festival in China.

Throughout the year, Raindance runs evening and weekend film training courses covering everything from producing, directing, screenwriting, technical crafts (e.g. lighting, sound, editing), and hosts international guest tutors such as Academy Award nominee Guiellermo Arriaga and screenwriting coach to the studios John Truby.
