Duration: 1Day: Legislation RRO (Fire Safety) Act 2005
Aim: To provide students with a clear understanding of the role of the Intervention - Industrial Fire Marshal & Intervention Team during an emergency and to provide students with a clear understanding of the safe selection and use of portable & fixed firefighting equipment and the maintenance of such equipment.
Outline
Learning Objectives:By the end of the session, the students will be able to:
Theory Subjects
- Describe the role of an Industrial Fire Warden
- Understand the importance of fire doors
- Describe and understand the triangle of fire
- Recognize the common causes of fire
- Operate and understand a safety audit check process
- Understand and implement evacuation procedures and recognise human behavior
- State the purpose of fire safety drills
- Identify the different classes of fire and the types of extinguishing media to deal with them
- Operate different types of Building Site portable firefighting equipment safely and effectively
10. Understand the maintenance requirements for each type of extinguisher

Lesson Plan:
09:00 Introduce aims and objectives.
Describe the role of an Industrial fire marshal
Communications & Liaison
Introduce the triangle of fire and explain extinction.
Introduce and describe the causes of fire on sites
Describe and explain an audit safety check system.
10:30: Break (20 Min)
10:50: Summaries and confirm the first session’s contents and understanding.
- Explain evacuation methods and discuss human behavior in a fire situation.
- Explain the purpose of fire drills.
- Explain the classes of fire and the extinguishing media and types of fire
- Explain and show the different types of fire equipment available
- Discuss leadership and Dynamic Risk Assessment
- Discuss the risk assessment and conduct a safety brief for practical fire extinguisher use.
- Demonstrate the safe use of a fire blanket and nominate students to apply knowledge.
13:00 – 13:40: Break for Lunch 30 Minutes
Extinguishers & Fire Equipment Available for Use
13:30: Demonstrate the safe use of all extinguishers with fire scenarios and nominate students to apply knowledge
14:00: Ignite flammable solid fire and demonstrate the practical application of fire behavior using a fire blanket to show re-ignition (consolidate fire triangle understanding)
15:00: Summaries all extinguisher uses & fire-fighting equipment
15:15: Break 15 minutes
15:30: State the aims of the session regarding fire equipment maintenance.
Explain the methods of servicing and standard testing the different types of fire extinguisher and include a practical demonstration for each.
17:00: Course Finish: Summaries the whole course contents and takes questions

- 3 Years as a Consultant Trainer with the Fire Service College
- 10 Years at a Major UK Petro-Chemical Industry Fire Station as a senior officer in charge of incidents
- Trained Oil/Gas Fire & Safety Officers in Kuwait and further training in the UK
- Worked in Libya as a HSE & Fire Supervisor and as a training officer
- Consultant HSE & Emergency Response Trainer to Total UK & Connoco
- JOIFF (Joint Oil Industry Fire & Safety Forum) Accredited Training Instructor in Emergency Response and Confined Space and PTW Systems delivering Internationally accredited training to Emergency Response Teams
- Certificated Nebosh & Hazmats/CABA/Confined Space & H2S Instructor
- Delivers Fire/Safety/HSE 1st Aid, Emergency Response Training around the UK to many clients and companies on a regular and consultancy basis including Total/Chevron/Connoco & Dove Oil Yemen
As a training officer and HSE Supervisor specialising in compliance with HSE policy while assessing training need, writing and delivering courses in all major HSE, Fire & Rescue disciplines Including basic initial training through to supervisory and specialist subjects He is widely travelled with recent middle-east oil refinery fire-fighting teaching experience in Kuwait and Libya.
