What does the Basic Life Support course involve?

Basic life support involves airway maintenance and supporting breathing and circulation following cardiac arrest without any equipment other than a simple airway protective device. Essentially BLS is used to buy time by providing effective ventilation and circulation until the underlying cause of cardiac arrest is established and reversed. Failure to provide adequate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) within the first 3 to 4 minutes can result in irreversible cerebral damage. It is therefore essential to deliver effective CPR to increase the chances of survival and recovery until the arrival of emergency services.

Basic Life Support training can be taken independently or as part of our mandatory training for care staff, nurses, agency workers, carers and other healthcare professionals who deliver care to patients in hospital and community settings.

Who is the Basic Life Support course for?

All health and social care workers are required to take the Basic Life Support refresher training course on a yearly basis to keep up with the UK Resuscitation Council basic life support guidelines, CQC recommendations, NHS policies and current practice. This includes doctors, nurses, support workers, mental health workers, practitioners and allied health professionals (AHP’s). Employers must ensure staff are up to date with resuscitation training and compliance in line with CQC requirements. Our basic life support courses ensure competency and thorough knowledge of the subject, as well as ensuring good practice in the workplace.
