This course goes beyond the knowledge and learning outcomes of QCF Safe Handling of People qualification. Students learn the practical skills to train, coach and supervise care teams moving and handling of residents. Successful candidates would then be able to teach both patient handling and handling refresher courses.

Aim

The aim of the course is to teach students the skills needed to train, coach and supervise person centered moving and handling of patients.

Theory Based Learning Outcomes 

By the end of the course students will be able to:

1. Assess staff performance, needs and ability

2. Assess residents ability and needs

3. Understand Handling Regulations and their application in a workplace

4. Identify and apply the core bio-mechanical principles of safer handling

5. Identify how the spine and muscles can be damaged by poor handling

6. Identify the role TVA and the posterior chain in safer handling

7. Explain the relationship between ergonomics and safer handling

8. Deal with special handling considerations

9. Plan emergency evacuations 

10. Explain the organisations role in handling

11. Identify the different types learning styles and the people learn

12. Plan organisationally relevant training sessions

13. Use a variety of training media and presentation techniques

14. Identify how to communicate effectively in training sessions

15. Manage and direct students 

16. Manage the transfer of skills from the training room to the workplace

Practically Based Learning Outcomes 

By the end of the course students will be able to demonstrate how to:

  1. Informally assess a residents physical and mental capability
  2. Help a resident stand from a chair and bed
  3. Help a resident transfer safely
  4. Assist a resident to walk a short distance
  5. Help a resident move in bed with equipment
  6. Turn a resident in bed
  7. Slide a resident in bed
  8. Use a variety of pieces of small handling equipment
  9. Hoist a resident form bed to chair and chair to bed
  10. Handling of objects 
  11. Informatively and informatively assess students
  12. Research and plan handling training sessions
  13. Create relevant learning materials and resources 
  14. Deliver a handling training session in a variety ways without PowerPoint
  15. Communicate and mange students effectively
  16. Evaluate training needs and programs
  17. RIDDOR, incident and accident investigation
  18. Critically reflect 

Assessment 
The assessment comprises three areas:

1. Practical teaching assessment

2. Practical handling of people assessment 

3. Theory paper

Note:

The course is a very intensive and fun weeks training. There is a homework element each night and each day is a very full on experience. The course offers a lot of hands on in two important subject areas:

  1. Practical moving and handling of patients skills
  2. Practical teaching, coaching and supervision skills for person centered handling

However all that attend need to a have a current moving and handling of patients qualification and a least three years relevant handling experience in the care sector.

 

Speaker/s

George Flaherty MSc MBA Ba Ed, started working within social care in 1995.  He is now renowned for his ability to pass on practical skills to those that attend his seminars and courses across the UK, Europe and the USA.

Over the years George has managed and successfully marketed his own businesses.  He has now passes the skills he has learnt to owners and managers of social care settings.  George is often a guest speaker at conferences and seminars explaining how to fill care home beds and promote homes successfully. 

He is a published author of many books.  His latest book The Guide to Filling Care Home Beds is due for publication December 2011.
