Accidents are often described as undesired events and inevitably lead to undesired consequences for organisations in terms of loss of productivity, civil claims, criminal prosecutions and poor publicity. There is also the burden on society in terms of treatment costs for injured workers. By conducting true root cause analysis employers avoid the risk of repeat accidents and promote a positive safety culture within their organisations. By identifying corrective measures and preventive controls employers also ensure that any associated corrective costs are dedicated to problem resolution. Timely reporting of a well investigated accident, under RIDDOR Regulations, often leads to the avoidance of HSE inspectorate intervention and enforcement action. By understanding where human error in accidents takes place employers are able to accurately identify employee’s training needs and meet their legal obligations.
