In order to work as a Security Guard in the UK you must hold a valid SIA Security Guard licence. A security guard is classed as carrying out manned guarding activities on premises, except where the activity only involves the use of CCTV equipment or falls within the definition of cash and valuables in transit or close protection.
The Security Guarding course is split into three sections. The first of these sections looks into the security industry as a whole which includes a wide variety of subjects but is not limited to; Introduction to SIA and Security, Communication, Emergency Procedures, Fire Procedures, Health and Safety and the law. This section has a 25 question multiple choice exam at the start of the second day.
The Second component of the course is specifically related to the Security Guard role covering; the role of a security officer in the private security industry, understanding the importance and reasons for patrolling, understand how to control access to and egress from a site, understanding basic search procedures, understand the technology and monitoring systems in the security environment, law and how it applies to the private security operative, reporting and record keeping. This section has a 40 question multiple choice exam on the third day.
The third component of this award is Conflict Management. The course content includes the law relating to violence at work, risk assessment, risk reduction, dynamic risk assessment, responses to threat, the basics of communication, non-verbal communication, defusing high risk conflict and support and learning from conflict. This section also has a 25 question multiple choice exam, which must be successfully completed.
All three components must have been completed and passed in order for candidates to apply to the SIA for their Security Guard licence. If any candidates fail to pass any of the modules then a free re-sit is available.
The course is held over 3 days.
