It’s very simple.
The Cambridge English exams test your English ability against a set of criteria to determine your level of English, ranging from CEFR A1 (Beginner) through to C2 (Proficiency).
Cambridge English First deals with CEFR B2, Cambridge English Advanced looks at CEFR C1 and Cambridge English Proficiency is aimed at CEFR C2.
You will be tested in all language skills: Speaking, Writing, Listening, Reading & Use of English. In each test you get a score, which are added together to give a final overall grade. Each test has its own pass scores.
Each exam lasts between 3.5 – 4 hours.
