In this relaxed one day class, you’ll learn how to work with silver metal clay. This class runs at the Bugle Studio.

During the day you will make a pair of earrings, a moulded charm, a pendant and have enough material to make at least one other item to your own design using silver clay. You will learn how to fire and finish them and put them on sterling silver ear wires and a chain which are included in the price. So you will be able to wear your jewellery home to show everyone how well you did! Our experience shows us that even complete beginners with no jewellery making experience leave the class thrilled with what they've made.

Level: No previous experience required

Timings: 10am - 5pm each day

This introduction to silver metal clay course is for people new to the fantastic medium of metal clay who want to learn what it can do. No previous experience of metal clay or jewellery making is needed. You'll be guided through every step by Julia Rai who is an experienced metal clay tutor and we guarantee you'll come out with some great jewellery.

This one day course will introduce you to metal clay through some simple projects in a relaxed atmosphere. The emphasis will be on building confidence working with metal clay at your own pace and focusing on fun. You'll learn how to make a simple pendant or flat charm to get you started. Once you've got a bit of confidence using metal clay, you can begin to really play and create your own designs.

During the day, you'll learn the following skills:-

  • Rolling out and texturing the clay
  • Cutting and punching holes into the clay
  • Drying and refining your work
  • Firing the pieces using a butane torch
  • Polishing and finishing your work
  • Hanging your finished pieces on a chain or attaching earring wires
  • Making moulded charms

Julia will help you to create beautiful fine silver jewellery in whatever style you choose. All the equipment you need will be provided and there will be some tools to buy if you want to continue creating as soon as you get home. By the end of the day you'll have enough knowledge and confidence to create unique pieces of jewellery using metal clay at your own kitchen table!

This course is particularly suitable for people who need a bit more time to learn new things or who have limitations with manual dexterity. There is no pressure and Julia will work with individuals at their own pace to ensure they achieve their goals for the day.

The course cost includes enough silver metal clay to create the basic projects plus jump rings, earring wires and a sterling silver chain. You can buy additional metal clay, chains or earring wires on the day or bring your own silver metal clay if you'd prefer.

The Cornwall School of Art, Craft and Jewellery was founded by two UK craft and jewellery artists, Julia Rai and Marion Wilson. Their vision is for this centre to bring together the very best teachers in the fields of art, craft and jewellery, in an inspiring creative environment.

Based at Coldrenick Farm in Bodmin, the School provides students of all levels with a safe and supportive learning environment. From short taster classes through to longer intensive courses, the School caters for a wide range of art, craft and jewellery making subjects.

The School is in a converted barn on a working sheep farm. The farm dates back to the 1800's and has been in the current owner's family since that time. The courtyard outside has a number of granite standing stones reclaimed from a Dutch barn which used to stand on the site. The location is rural and quiet, completely conducive to a relaxed and creative break from everyday life.
