The Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (QCF) aims to teach the essential aspects of dealing with emergencies in the event of an illness or an accident involving babies or young children. Specifically designed for learners on the OFSTED Compulsory Register, working in an early years setting such as nurseries, this course provides an understanding on how to administer effective first aid on paediatric casualties.  This course is regulated by Ofqual and is supported by Skills for Care and Development.

Outline

Learners must achieve two credits from the two mandatory units to be awarded the Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid. The duration of this course is twelve hours and covers the following topics:

Unit 1 – Paediatric Emergency First Aid

  • Understand the role of the first aider
  • Assess an emergency situation and act safely and effectively
  • Provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and breathing/not breathing normally
  • Foreign body airway obstruction/Choking
  • Wounds and bleeds
  • Infant and a child who is suffering from shock

Unit 2 – Managing paediatric illness and injury

  • Provide first aid to an infant and a child with a suspected fracture and a dislocation
  • Head, neck and back injuries
  • First aid to an infant and a child with conditions affecting the eyes, ears and nose
  • Chronic medical condition or sudden illness
  • Infant and a child who is experiencing the effects of extreme heat and cold
  • Electric shock
  • Burns or scalds
  • Infant and a child who has been poisoned
  • Infant and a child who has been
  • Bites or stings

Assessment method

This qualification is assessed through activities, which are developed by First Aid Safety, internally marked and sampled as part of quality assurance/internal verification procedures.

The assessment methods for this qualification are:-

Practical demonstration

The practical assessment of learners for the qualification is completed throughout the course delivery. This on-going assessment will involve learners demonstrating practical first aid skills across a number of areas.

Oral questioning

Learners will be required to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding by answering a range of questions relating to the assessment criteria with in the learners records given to each learner at the beginning of the course.

All learning outcomes in the unit(s) must be achieved to successfully gain the qualification.
