Suitable for beginners, this one-day printmaking workshop will focus on mark-making for linocut printing. Linocut is a form of relief printing that uses linoleum as the printing block (a composite flooring material made from cork and linseed oil with a hessian backing). This is then cut into using v tools or gouges to create an image. It is a negative technique where the cuts that you make do not print. We will work through several printmaking exercises throughout the day exploring the varying qualities of lines that can be made and which tools you need to make them. This will include a mark-making sampler. We will also explore different ways to interpret an image through relief print, cutting the block, transferring a design and also how to print. No previous experience of printmaking is necessary – just bring along a few ideas or images to work with and we will help you do the rest.

All materials provided – suitable for everyone – beginners welcome

Magenta Sky Arts and Crafts was founded in 2003, just after I left university, as a part-time venture. It began as a way of selling my work and also a way to teach printmaking courses and workshops in various arts centres and other craft venues. Since then I have expanded to teach more classes in different crafts and started working as an arts author self-publishing colour art books. I now have a small range of art and craft books available to buy in printmaking (Learning Linocut), crochet (Amigurumi Animals) and Christmas crafts (Make Your Own Christmas Tree Decorations).

The Introduction to Printmaking course was introduced in 2007 following demand from students attending workshops and based up on the classes I had been teaching already. The success of the course was quite a surprise to me and we have seen plenty of students really build their knowledge and make fantastic works within the time we have been running it.

Magenta Sky continues to go from strength to strength  as I share my knowledge and passion for all things printmaking, arts and crafts across the internet!”
