Course Summary

The NEBOSH National Certificate in Environmental Management is a qualification for managers, supervisors and employees who have responsibility for managing environmental issues as part of their day to day duties. The qualification focuses on environmental management systems and impact assessments.

NEBOSH research shows that around two-thirds of health and safety management positions at work also feature responsibility for environmental management. It can therefore be useful to combine the NEBOSH General Certificate with the Environmental Certificate. The Certificate can also be a useful stepping stone towards achieving the NEBOSH Environmental Diploma.

Pre-requisites

Some previous environmental management knowledge would be beneficial, but is not essential.

Validity of Award

This qualification does not expire.

Length of Course

The EC1 module of the course can be completed in the classroom in 5 days, with the exam usually on the Monday following the course which gives the weekend for extra revision. A blend of both classroom and private study can be used to suit your individual needs. Following this, the EC2 project will be completed by the candidate, usually at their own workplace.

Course Information

This course covers the practical issues of managing environmental risk. The syllabus takes a risk management approach, based on the best practice and international industry standards, including:

• Environmental management systems and impact assessments
• Sources and use of energy and energy efficiency
• Control of pollution
• Planning for and dealing with environmental emergencies.

The NEBOSH Certificate in Environmental Management consists of two units; each separately assessed:

• Management and control of environmental hazards (EC1)
• Environmental practical application (EC2)

Assessment

Unit EC1 is assessed by a two-hour written examination. Candidate scripts are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH.

Unit EC2 is assessed by a practical assessment, which requires the candidate to carry out an environmental review of a workplace or organisation and produce a justified action plan to improve performance. This is usually carried out at the candidates own workplace, and must be completed within 2 weeks of the examination date for EC1. The practical examination is internally assessed by the course provider and externally moderated by NEBOSH.
