What is this course about?
On this course, you will learn how to use listening and counselling skills for a variety of different contexts for example, in the workplace or in volunteering. You will learn practical skills and competencies to be able to use counselling skills ethically and safely to help others as part of the first stage in professional counselling training. You will also learn a great deal about yourself.

What topics will I study?
The course is “experiential”. This means you will learn by “doing”. You will learn by working together with your peers, your tutors as well as in personal study. The 7 learning outcomes are:

1. Using counselling skills ethically and safely
2. Establishing and sustaining the boundaries of the helping role
3. Working empathically as a helper
4. Focusing on the helper’s needs and concerns
5. Using self-awareness in helping work
6. Using a range of counselling skills to facilitate the helping interaction
7. Using feedback and reflection to enhance counselling skills
