National Water Hygiene (Blue Card)

Gain access to clean water sites as well as areas of the clean water network with the National Water Hygiene Card. This is also referred to as the Blue Card.

The National Water Hygiene is approved by the Energy and Utility Skills Register (EUSR). They promote hygienic habits around the drinking water supply. Hence, this half-day training course gives you recognition by UK water industries and will allow you access to restricted sites.

Who needs National Water Hygiene Card training?

The Blue Card is for those who require access to restricted sites, such as:

  • Service reservoirs
  • Pumping stations
  • Treatment works
  • Wells
  • Springs
  • Bore Holes
  • The network of water mains and service pipes

For this reason, professions suited to this course include:

  • Civil engineers
  • Water engineers
  • Environmental health professionals
  • Facilities management organisations
  • Contractors

Course Contents

Candidates will learn a variety of topics. These include the importance of personal hygiene, potential contaminants as well as incident reporting.

The full course content is:

  • Responsibilities of those working with the clean water supply
  • The importance of personal hygiene
  • Hygiene code awareness
  • Potential contaminants
  • Pipe storage
  • Pet and livestock risks
  • Chlorination, disinfection and cleaning
  • “Sump and Pump” systems
  • Incident reporting
  • Approved products
  • Sampling and audits
Assessment and Certification

Candidates will undertake a 25 multiple-choice question paper with a pass mark of 22. In addition, there is a health screening questionnaire. This ensures no candidates are carriers of waterborne diseases, hence allowing you access to sites.

Each successful candidate will receive their card within 28 days of taking the course. Meanwhile, candidates will receive a cover note from their tutor allowing them access to sites.

The National Water Hygiene Card is valid for 3 years. After which the course will require renewal by anyone still working within the industry.

Note: On the day, all those attending must bring with them a form of photographic identification.
