Details

Our ‘Noise Awareness in the Workplace’ online training course is designed to help employees who are exposed to noise at work to understand the consequences of ‘noise induced hearing loss’ and the measures to protect themselves when exposed to noise at work.

Noise Awareness Training

Exposure to loud noise at work can damage your hearing. Very often, the damage occurs gradually and it may only become apparent once irreparable damage has occurred.

Hearing deteriorates naturally with age but ‘noise induced hearing loss’ is a major occupational health hazard leading to:

  • Permanent hearing damage.
  • Tinnitus.

Tinnitus is described as a ringing, whistling, buzzing or humming in the ears. This can be an extremely distressing condition which can be constant and lead to disturbed sleep.

Although hearing aids can help with damaged hearing, there is no cure for hearing loss or tinnitus.

Legislation Regarding Noise at Work

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 requires employers to take action to reduce the risk of hearing damage to employees and others who may be affected.

Noise is measured in decibels. An 'A-weighting' sometimes written as 'dB(A)', is used to measure average noise levels, and a 'C-weighting' or 'dB(C)', to measure peak, impact or explosive noises.

Where employees are exposed to noise levels between 80dB(A) and 85dB(A), (the first action level), employers must:

  • Carry out a noise risk assessment.
  • Reduce noise at source wherever practical.
  • Provide hearing protection.
  • Provide information and training for all employees exposed.

Where employees are exposed to noise levels above 85dB(A), (the second action level), employers must:

  • Carry out a noise risk assessment.
  • Reduce noise at source wherever practical.
  • Provide hearing protection and ensure it is worn.
  • Provide regular audiometry testing.
  • Provide information and training for all employees exposed.

The course will also help employers meet their responsibilities under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005.
