Risk Assessment in the Workplace Training Course

The term ‘risk assessment’ has been much maligned by some media outlets in recent years but this is an activity that is carried out naturally for most of us every day. We undertake our own natural risk assessments before crossing the road, driving our car etc. Risk assessment is a part of all our lives.

The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 is the primary piece of legislation covering occupational health and safety in Great Britain. This legislation sets out the duty of care employers have towards employees and members of the public. 

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, (as amended) require employers to undertake risk assessments for work activities that have the potential to cause harm to employees and other people who may be affected by their actions.

An employer must:

• Identify workplace hazards; what could cause injury or illness in their business. 
• Evaluate the risk: decide how likely it is that someone could be harmed and what the severity could be. 
• Take actions required to eliminate the hazard or put in control measures if total elimination of the risk is not possible.

Risk assessments must be formally recorded if 5 or more people are employed.
