The course is split into two sections.

Understanding the Menopause

This short section explains the biology of a female body to include the four main cycles, Menstruation, Perimenopause, Menopause and Post Menopause.  This helps to give a basic understanding of what the Menopause is.

Someone is considered menopausal when they haven’t had a period for 12 months in a row. The perimenopause is the transitional time around the menopause.  During the perimenopause, someone continues to have periods but their usual symptoms and cycles start to change.

Each person experiences the perimenopause and menopause in a way that’s unique to them.

Make sure you listen carefully as two questions follow this section to check you have understood the content.

Taking Action

Employers have a legal duty to look after employees experiencing the menopause. Menopause isn’t specifically mentioned in the Equality Act but due to the nature of it, it is connected to the characteristics of age, gender reassignment and sex, as well as disability, if symptoms have had a significant impact on a person’s health for 12 months or more.  And as it can mentally impact someone’s physical and mental health, it is also part of an employer’s duty of care within the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations.

This section covers how workplaces can ensure that they are adhering to health and safety workplace regulations.  It contains guidance of training Line Managers so that they know where and how support can be obtained for any employees experiencing symptoms that are significantly impacting their performance.  It is important for employees to feel confident in asking for support, guidance and adjustments at work, to feel confident in discussing symptoms if they choose to do so, know any information they share will be dealt with in the strictest confidence and to know that their job security or promotional opportunities will not be affected.

Line Managers must know, understand and follow organisational policies with regards to supporting women experiencing menopausal symptoms.  They need to know what the policy is, where they are and what workplace adjustments they can offer.

If your organisation doesn’t have a policy the course includes a section on guidance of how to create a policy and what should be included.  Also, as part of the employers’ duty of care to minimise, reduce or remove risks to everyone’s health and safety at work, a risk assessment will need to be completed.  This section gives helpful hints as to what to take into account when creating a risk assessment and examples of what reasonable adjustments can include.  If the work environment is having a negative impact on your employees symptoms and a solution is reasonable, it is up to the employer to do their best to accommodate the employee’s needs.

The course also gives advice as to how to manage sickness records if the employee is off sick because of the menopause or perimenopause.

And of course, we all have a duty of care to ourselves and the final section covers how we can manage our own symptoms such as lifestyle changes, exercise and diet, wellbeing practices such as making space and time for you and seeking medical treatment and/or herbal remedies.

The course can be completed in just 30 minutes and provides the user with a printable certificate upon completion of the end-of-training test.
