Details

Our Manual Handling online training course will help delegates understand the potential musculoskeletal problems that can occur from manual handling activities, the manual handling assessment process and correct lifting and carrying techniques.

Manual handling includes both transporting a load and supporting a load in a static posture. The load may be moved or supported by the hands or any other part of the body, for example the shoulder. Manual handling also includes the deliberate dropping or throwing of a load, whether into a container or from one
person to another.

Manual handling injuries are part of a wider group of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The term ‘musculoskeletal disorders’ covers any injury, damage or disorder of the joints or other tissues in the upper/lower limbs or the back. Some MSDs are caused by work activities but some are caused by activities outside work or may be the result of illnesses or diseases unrelated to work. How much a person is affected by MSDs varies widely. Some people are able to continue normal activities but more severely affected people may need adjustments to their workplace to help them continue to work or may need to take time off work to recover.

Legislation

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, as amended, requires employers to protect workers from the risk of injury from hazardous manual handling in the workplace. The regulations state that employers must:

  • Avoid hazardous manual handling, so far as reasonably practicable.
  • Assess the risk of injury from any hazardous manual handling operations that cannot be avoided.
  • Reduce the risk of injury from hazardous manual handling to as low as reasonably practicable.

The weight of a load is important, though the law does not set specific weight limits.
