Details

The course is split into four sections.

1. Basic Life Support for Adults

Although this first section concentrates on basic life support for adults, it covers DRABC.  This stands for Danger, Response, Airways, Breathing and Circulation… or Call for help and these steps all apply to adults, children, and infants alike with only one or two minor differences.  This section takes each one of these steps in turn and breaks it down for easy understanding.  The differences for children are clearly set out in Section 2 and the differences for infants are detailed in Section 3.
This section also looks at recognising when an adults airway is obstructed and what to do to help them if they are choking, how and when to perform CPR on an adult and important precautions to take with regards to COVID-19.

A medical emergency scenario is given at the end of this section with a multiple choice question to ensure you have understood the content.

2. Treating a Choking Child

This section looks at how to treat a child between the age of 1 and the onset of puberty if their airway becomes obstructed and they are choking including how and when to do back blows, abdominal thrusts and CPR.

Two different medical emergency scenarios are given at the end of this section with a multiple choice question to ensure you have understood the content.

3. Obstructed Airways - Infants

This section looks at how to treat a child age 1 or younger if their airway becomes obstructed and they are choking including how and when to do back blows, chest thrusts and CPR.

A medical emergency scenario is given at the end of this section with a multiple choice question to ensure you have understood the content.

4. Training and Record Keeping

In the UK, every workplace with 10 or more employees must have an Accident Book.

This section covers what information needs to be included when recording an incident in the Accident Book or any other form of recording procedures that your organisation may have.  It also covers your responsibilities under data protection laws that you need to know if your role in your organisation means you are responsible for making, storing, recording, or in any other way, processing personal data.

Further Training Requirements

On completion of this course you will have learned some extremely useful skills which can help save someone's life.

You will need additional practical training to put the knowledge you have gained into practice before you will be considered competent enough to carry out Basic Life Support.  In order to complete your Care Certificate your employer needs to provide you with practical training.

This course also will not provide you with the competence to become a First Aider.  For this you will need to undertake specific first-aid training - although this isn’t necessary for completing the Care Certificate.
