Details

The course is split into five sections.

1. What is Asthma?

1 in 11 children have asthma, that’s about 2 or 3 in every class at school.

In this section the course looks at the causes, diagnosis and effects of asthma including childhood asthma and suspected asthma.

This section also explains how to set up an Asthma Action Plan and what should be included such as an Individual Healthcare Plan and a School Asthma Card.

2. Triggers and Symptoms of Asthma

In this section the course looks at the different types of asthma triggers, such as allergic and non-allergic, and will explain how they can be harmful to children with asthma.

This section also explains what the common asthma symptoms are i.e. coughing, chest tightness, wheezing and shortness of breath and how you can recognise them.

3. Medication

Medication is used to keep asthma under control.

Sometimes tablets or liquid medication is used, but most children will only need to take inhaled medicines when they're at school.

Inhalers are the most common form of medication to take for asthma and this section looks at the different types of inhaler, including which ones are commonly used in the different stages of childhood.

This section also explains how to administer, look after and store medication.

4. Asthma Attacks

One child in the UK is admitted to hospital with an asthma attack every 20 minutes!

Early intervention is vital in preventing asthma attacks, and school staff have a big part to play in this.  In this section the course considers how important it is to control asthma and how to treat a child who's having an asthma attack.

5. School Responsibilities

Asthma can affect many aspects of a child’s life. It can affect their social life, their physical and emotional well-being, and, of course, it can disrupt their education too.

In this section the course looks at school responsibilities, policies and protocol, as well as staff responsibilities in the classroom, outside of the classroom and on school trips.

Conclusion

At the end of this course you will have a better understanding about what asthma is and the impact it can have on a child’s life.  This course will give you the knowledge to feel comfortable to monitor or help a child or young person with asthma.

This course finishes with a test to check you have understood the content.

Outline

This course has been written for people who work with children, particularly those who work in nurseries, schools and colleges. It’s also suitable for anyone who looks after a child with asthma, including parents, guardians, family members and carers; and it can be used by a young person with asthma.

There are around 5 and a half million people in the UK with asthma, over a million are children.

But around 90% of asthma-related deaths are preventable.

The course will help you to recognise the triggers and symptoms of asthma and the course explains how to care for a child when they are having an asthma attack.

This course will also provide an overview of the common types of inhalers and how to treat infants, juniors and teens and also looks at what asthma is, the triggers and symptoms of asthma, the different kinds of medication, what to do when a child has an asthma attack and what your schools responsibilities are.
