The course is split into five sections:

1. What is Diabetes?

Your body needs insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas; it’s what allows glucose to enter your cells from the bloodstream.

Once the glucose is in the cells it’s converted into energy.

Glucose comes from digesting the carbohydrates and starchy food we eat. It gives us vital fuel.

Diabetes is caused when a person’s body can no longer produce insulin, cannot produce enough insulin, or produces insulin that doesn’t work properly.

A person with diabetes can’t convert glucose into energy on their own, because they don’t have the insulin they need to let the glucose into the cells.

This means the glucose stays in the bloodstream and this can be very dangerous.

There are two types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2 and this first section looks at the two different types including symptoms, diagnosis and effects.

This section also explains what Individual Healthcare Plans are and why they are so important.

2. Everyday Risks and Responsibilities

The main aim of treating diabetes is to control blood glucose and blood pressure levels.

In this section we will look at how this should be done, and the everyday dangers of not maintaining good glucose control.

3. Medication for Diabetes

In this section the course looks at the different types of medication that are used to treat diabetes, and the important things you need to know about how to use it, store it, and what to expect on a day-to-day basis.

4. School Trips

In this section the course looks at how to look after a child with diabetes on a school trip to include preparing before the trip, how to deal with emergencies if the child becomes sick whilst you are away and how to store medication.

It’s all about keeping them safe and well when they are away from home.

5. Education and Well-Being

In this section the course looks at things that teachers need to consider in the classroom and during exam time.

This section also covers ways children and teenagers may react to their diabetes, how they may behave at school, and how you can help them cope.  This includes a small section on the risks involved in teenage pregnancy and diabetes.

Conclusion

At the end of this course you will have a better understanding about what diabetes is and how the condition can affect physical and emotional well-being.

This course will give you the knowledge to feel comfortable to monitor and help a child or young person with diabetes.

Remember that understanding and communication are key.

This course finishes with a test to check you have understood the content.
