Details

This course is split into five sections.

1. The Background of Epilepsy

Every year in the UK around 1,000 people die as a result of epilepsy, a third of which are children and young adults. Over half these deaths are avoidable.

In this section the course looks at what epilepsy is, how it can be caused, and how it is diagnosed.

2. Types of Epileptic Seizures

This section covers the four areas of the brain affected by focal seizures (affects one part of the brain) and the six main types of generalised seizures (affecting the whole of the brain).

Focal seizures include Temporal Lobes, Frontal Lobes, Parietal Lobes and Occipital Lobes.  Generalised seizures include Absence Seizures, Atonic Seizures, Tonic Seizures, Clonic Seizure, Tonic Clonic Seizure and Myoclonic Seizures.  The section explains what symptoms to look out for to identify the type of seizure and what part of the brain is being affected and how to deal with all of these very different seizures.

3. Triggers and Treatment

There are two types of signs that a seizure may be about to happen.  These are aura’s and prodromes.  Aura’s can consist of a child experiencing a strange taste or smell, or an odd feeling that’s hard to describe, such as a tightness in the chest, or a feeling of falling. Prodromes can include changes in a child’s behaviour.

There’s often no obvious reason why a seizure has happened, but the course will raise your awareness of the triggers such as lack of sleep, some medications, flashing or flickering lights, because these triggers will make seizures more likely.

This section also covers the emergency treatment protocol that should be held in a child’s Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP) if emergency medication is held at school and when to call an ambulance.

4. Your Responsibilities

The Equality Act makes sure that people with long-term conditions, such as epilepsy, aren’t treated any differently to anyone else and schools have a legal requirement to support the physical and mental well-being of these children, so that all children are able to play a full and active role in school life.

In this section the course covers everything you need to know to meet the legal requirements including the responsibilities of the school, policies and risk assessments.

5. How Epilepsy Affects Education and Well-being

In this section, the course looks at how epilepsy can affect a child’s learning and how problems can be overcome.

Conclusion

On completion of this course you will know what an important part you play in the life of a child with epilepsy, simply by being aware of what’s happening to them and knowing what to do to help them.

This course ends with a test to ensure you have understood the content.

Outline

If you are caring for a child with epilepsy, whether you work with children in a school, nursery or college or whether you are a parent, family member, guardian or carer, this online training course is just for you.

In the UK around 64,000 children have epilepsy. That’s about one in every 220 children.

This means that, on average, there will be one child with epilepsy in each primary school and around 5 children with epilepsy in each secondary school - so all schools need to know how to support children with epilepsy.

Learners will gain a better understanding of the different types of epileptic seizures, what your responsibilities are when caring for children with epilepsy and what to do to help a child who is having a seizure.  The course aims to help the user understand what can trigger a seizure and the larger effects that epilepsy can have on a child's education and wellbeing.
