This course is split into five sections.

1. Allergies

In this section the course looks at what an allergy is and how it can be caused, how allergies are triggered and what symptoms you need to look out for.

If someone has an allergy it is because their body is reacting to a substance that should be harmless.  These include dust mite, pollen, food, insect bites, mould, medication and latex, household chemicals and animal dander.  These substances are known as allergens.  When a person comes into contact with an allergen their body creates antibodies to fight against it as their immune system sees the allergen as a threat and reacts to it.

Allergic reactions normally happen very quickly after being exposed to an allergen and can be mild, moderate or severe.  The course looks at different allergens in detail and the different types of reactions to an allergen including a cross reaction.

The way a child reacts to an allergen can change over time. They are always at risk of a severe reaction.

Even a small amount of allergen can cause a severe reaction.

2. Allergy Management

This section will explain the best way to monitor, help and treat a child with allergies.

This section also discusses how important it is for children with allergies to have an Individual Healthcare Plan, how you can avoid allergens and what medication is used to treat mild and moderate reactions.  These include antihistamines and inhaler.

3. Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a severe reaction to an allergen.  This is when so much histamine is released that the whole body is affected.  This can cause a person's circulatory system to stop distributing oxygen around the body, leading to Anaphylactic Shock.

In this section the course looks at how you can identify and help prevent anaphylaxis and what to do if a child goes into anaphylactic shock.

Anaphylactic shock is treated with adrenaline which is administered by an auto-injector.  These come in a range of doses depending on the child's age and weight.  The section covers the emergency procedure including how to use the auto-injector and administer adrenalin and what to do if the child loses consciousness - recovery position/CPR.

4. School Policies and Responsibilities

In this section the course covers the responsibilities of the school management and staff and what needs to be considered by the school to help a child with allergies including school policy, school trips, medication, exams and risk factors inside and outside the classroom.

5. The Impact of Allergies on Children

In this section the course discusses the responsibilities of the parents and guardians, and what they should encourage their child to do on a daily basis.

It also looks at the impact allergies can have on a child’s emotional health, and how school staff can offer support and raise awareness.

Conclusion

At the end of this course you will know why it’s so important that a child with allergies avoids their allergens and how to recognise a child having a mild, moderate or severe allergic reaction.

You should also feel confident at monitoring and helping a child with allergies on a daily basis and what to do if their symptoms develop into anaphylaxis.

This course finishes with a test to ensure you have understood the content so be sure to pay attention.  Good luck!
