PART 1 - THEORY (online)

Delegates will fully understand the theory and will be able to demonstrate they can identify the correct patient, gain consent and perform an ECG, conforming to Skills for Health recommended standards and guidelines.

 

M01 – Introduction: History, definitions, types of ECG, the uses of an ECG, results, and risks.

M02 – Infection Prevention & Control: Reducing healthcare-associated infections. Keeping Safe.

M03 – Professionalism & Effective Communication: Interacting with patients and staff and the use of effective communication methods.

M04 – Legal Requirements & Consent: Legal Obligations and Accountability. Criminal, Civil and Contractual law in healthcare. Vicarious Liability and your Duty of Care.

M05 – Preparation for the ECG Examination: Patient preparation when performing a resting ECG, skin preparation, placement of the electrodes & the Angle of Louis.

M06 – The Electricity of the Heart: The heart’s electrical signal, depolarisation & repolarisation, the wiring of the heart, PQRST complex.

M07 – The ECG Machine: Times & speeds, PR interval, QRS complex, Recording an ECG, machine calibration, Obtaining a good quality recording, Variation from standard, Equipment & clinical room specification, environmental considerations, documentation, storage & confidentiality, and Electrocardiography on children.

M08 – The 12-Lead ECG: A detailed look at the 12-lead ECG.

SA node, the intrinsic rhythm of the heart, sinus arrhythmia, sinus bradycardia & sinus tachycardia, abnormalities in the cardiac rhythm, supraventricular rhythms, abnormal rhythm.

M14 - The Heart’s Rhythm – Bradycardias & Ectopic Beats: Escape rhythms, atrial escape, junctional escape, complete heart block, ventricular escape, accelerated idioventricular rhythm, extrasystoles, atrial & junctional extrasystoles and ventricular extrasystoles.

PART 2 - VIRTUAL CLASSROOM - HALF-DAY (am, pm or evening sessions)

M01: The ECG in Healthy Adults
A comprehensive understanding of acceptable variations within the normal ECG of healthy adults.

M02: The ECG in Healthy Children
An overview of the ECG in healthy children from birth onwards.

M03: Specific Abnormalities in Healthy People
Identifying abnormalities in the ECG amongst seemingly healthy individuals.

M04: ECG in Patients with Palpitations & Syncope
(Split into three sections, Part A, B & C.)

A: ECG in Patients with Palpitations & Syncope
A comprehensive examination of individuals experiencing palpitations and fainting episodes with a focus on diagnosing arrhythmias as the underlying cause. This includes an exploration of sinus rhythm, extrasystoles, paroxysmal tachycardia, as well as an evaluation of dizziness, syncope, and the importance of physical examinations.

B: ECG in Patients with Palpitations & Syncope –
Asymptomatic Patients
Identifying syncopal episodes attributable to cardiovascular disease as opposed to arrhythmias.
Recognising ECG markers for tachycardias, bradycardias, pre-excitation syndromes, bi-fascicular block, and first-degree block with bundle branch block.
C: ECG in Patients with Palpitations & Syncope -
Symptomatic Patients
Exploring sinus rhythm, including the differentiation of sinus tachycardia induced by anxiety. Distinguishing between supraventricular and ventricular extrasystoles, and identifying supraventricular, ventricular, and atrial tachycardias.
Diagnosing broad complex tachycardias, ventricular flutter and fibrillation, sick sinus syndrome, and Stokes-Adams attacks. Gaining insight into patients with pacemakers, understanding the causes of sudden death during a 24-hour ECG recording, and addressing carotid sinus hypersensitivity.

M05: What to do when an arrhythmia is recorded
Evaluating whether an arrhythmia possesses an underlying cause necessitating treatment or allowing for intervention.
Developing the ability to discern whether the arrhythmia itself warrants medical intervention. Understanding the fundamental principles of arrhythmia management.

M06: ECG in Patients with Chest Pain
Identifying symptoms associated with the causes of acute or chronic chest pain in patients presenting with conditions such as myocardial infarction (heart attack), pulmonary embolism, significant central pulmonary embolism, pericarditis, aortic dissection, oesophageal rupture, spinal
disorders, vertebral collapse, posterior infarction, and angina.
Gaining insight into the application of exercise testing and the utilisation of the Bruce Protocol in relevant clinical scenarios.

M07: What to do when a patient has chest pain
How to clinically respond to a patient with chest pain, including further investigations required, pain relief, history and examination and echocardiogram.

M08: An ECG in patients with breathlessness
The importance of gathering patient’s medical history to ascertain whether there is an underlying physical ailment and pinpoint the specific system that is malfunctioning.
Recognising symptoms indicative of conditions such as pulmonary oedema, chest diseases, and pulmonary congestion. Exploring the primary causes of heart disease and the diagnostic process. Providing an overview of ECG abnormalities affecting both the left and right sides of the heart, including patients with congenital heart diseases.
Offering guidelines for the management of breathlessness in patients.

M09: ECG as an aid for diagnosis
An understanding of the significance of performing an ECG as an aid to diagnosis and recognising it’s limitations.
Being able to recognise artifacts in ECG records, ECG in systemic diseases, abnormalities from electrolytes, and how medication effects the ECG.

M10: ECG – The Physiological Basis
A view of the cellular basis of the ECG, conduction of the depolarisation wave, intra-atrial conduction delay, AV node block and Bundle of His block, first-degree block, second-degree block and third-degree block, bundle branch block and fascicular block.
Examining cardiac rhythms arising from cardiac automaticity and disruptions in cardiac rhythm resulting from re-entry mechanisms.
