BEGINNERS CLOTH MAKING AND PATTERN CUTTING:

You will be given an introduction to sewing machine techniques and fabric properties. You will learn how to draft your own pattern, lay and cut it . You will then construct the Garment . You will be building up a folder of reference materials.

Week 1:

Introduction to using the sewing machine:

How to use the sewing machine;

Learn to set up and thread a sewing machine;

Learn different parts of sewing machine;

learn through demonstration, discussions, practices ,one to one instruction and guidance to achieve different types of stitching techniques

Using tools and equipment in sewing.

Learn how to sew practical and decorative stitches and simple applique.

Week 2:

Demonstration on basic properties of fabric, including:

Fabric width, length & selvedge, grain line

How to lay a pattern on fabric according to pattern instruction

Practical exercise: cutting out a pattern on paper, then onto fabric

Week 3:

Seams: seam Allowance & seam neatening

  1. Plain seam with 1cm, 1.5cm. 2cm seam allowance
  2. Plain seam with zig zag neating on raw edge
  3. French seam: this is a 2 in 1 seam & seam neatening

Week 4:

Binding seam: how to cut bias binding from fabric and bind a raw seam

Binding edge: using ready made binding

Week 5:

Construct sample for curved seams, corner seams

  1. Darts
  2. Round neckline Square neckline
  3. Stay stitch, e.g. around neckline
  4. Top stitch e.g. around a square patch pocket

Week 6:

Top stitch

  1. Top stitch around a square pocket
  2. Top stitch a hem

Week 7:

Construct a sample of Zips

  1. Lapped method
  2. Edge to edge method
  3. Invisible zip

Week 8:

Learn Body Measurement/Pattern Cutting/ Make your own Skirt/dress

  1. Learning seams allowance and Hems allowance etc.
  2. Laying out your own pattern on fabric appropriately
  3. Cutting out
  4. Making up skirt/method of assembly

Week 9:

Making up skirt /dress cont./ pressing techniques

Week 10:

Final Finish of skirt or Dress

Final Students will Receive a Certificate of Attendance and encourage to join Intermediate Class.
