Career Prospects

Various areas of operation require the expertise of private investigators. Some of these are addiction, fraud, theft, missing persons, employee screening, asset tracing, insurance issues, identity verification, intellectual property concerns, harassment, stalking and even a subject popularized by media: cheating spouse. Private investigators typically work for private citizens, government departments and businesses such as financial institutions, insurance companies, solicitors and councils and its licensing and regulation differ by country, state or territory.

Although your location may not specify a training requirement, training is necessary to attain skills that are indispensable when conducting investigation and when seeking employment or setting up your own agency. Your location dictates the licensing requirements before you can be employed as a private investigator or practice for a fee. A “Cert III” is necessary in QLD, NSW, WA, SA, Tasmania and Victoria but there is no training requirement set in the Northern Territory and ACT just like in the U.K. In the U.S. very few states require education qualifications.

Note that the ICI Private Investigation course is not designed to satisfy licensing requirement of a specific country or area but it contributes in achieving pertinent skills. Our course is designed for individuals with interest in the techniques and methodologies used in the practice so they can perform their own personal investigations instead of having to hire a private investigator. Likewise, the course imparts valuable skills to professionals (such as auditors, customs staff, counselors, journalists, debt collectors etc) who find private investigation skills useful in their careers.
