In the UK approximately 30,000 people sustain cardiac arrest outside hospital that are treated by emergency medical services each year.
This course is designed for all learners who wish to be trained in the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) and is recommended as training for first aiders in the workplace who have access to a defibrillator. Learners will understand the importance
of maintaining good practice in the safe, prompt and effective administration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillation.

Course Outline
Learners must achieve one credit from the mandatory unit to be awarded the qualification:
Unit 1 – Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillation Skills
- Understand basic life support requirements
- Demonstrate basic life support techniques and AED use in line with current national guidelines
- Demonstrate post-resuscitation procedures/li>
- Carry out basic user maintenance and troubleshoot problems with an AED
- Understand the safe use of an automated external defibrillator
Assessment method
This qualification is assessed through activities, which are developed by First Aid Safety, internally marked and sampled as part of quality assurance/internal verification procedures.

Practical demonstration
The practical assessment of learners for the qualification is completed throughout the course delivery. This on-going assessment will involve learners demonstrating practical first aid skills across a number of areas.
Oral questioning
Learners will be required to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding by answering a range of questions relating to the assessment criteria with in the learners records given to each learner at the beginning of the course.
All learning outcomes in the unit(s) must be achieved to successfully gain the qualification.
