Diploma in International English ESOL

Modules:
- International Spoken ESOL (8985) which assesses real speaking ability.
- International ESOL (8984) – a single exam paper which covers listening, reading and writing.
There are six levels linked to the Common European Framework (CEF). The upper levels, Expert and Mastery, are recognised by many English speaking universities as evidence of language proficiency for entry purposes.
Course Overview:
The course provides for students to progress through various levels of the International ESOL examinations
Access: can engage in conversation to establish shared understanding about familiar topics
Achiever: can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give explanations for opinions and plans.
Communicator: can understand the main ideas of complex communication on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation.
Expert: can understand a wide range of demanding longer texts, both written and spoken, and recognise implicit meaning.
The International ESOL Diploma (9992) is a combination of City & Guilds International ESOL (8984) and International Spoken ESOL (8985). The qualification assesses all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The diploma can be taken at six levels and was developed from the Common European Framework (CEF).
COURSE DURATION* 15 hours per week.
*Course duration is dependant on successful completion of all Course Modules, and may be delivered over 2 years, at 15 hours per week, over 3 days per week (which is the requirement for International students), in order to achieve the Award to which the Course
leads.
Entry Requirements
Candidates must have attained one of the following entryrequirements:
• Leaving Certificate or Higher School Certificate
• Relevant Work Experience in the Hospitality sector
• Other recognised qualifications of approved overseas Institutions
Assessment
The College has two streams of English study. The entry level for Stream 1 is IELTS 3.0 – 4.5. The entry level for Stream 2 is IELTS 5.0 – 7.0.
Upon entering the college, students must take a placement test. This will determine the stream into which the student will enter the English course.
Placement Test
The Placement Test is comprised of a written exam, accompanied by a 20 minute oral examination conducted by one of our English teachers.
According to the results, each student is assigned a class appropriate to their level and needs. Students who do not meet the minimum requirement for Stream 1 must agree to private, intensive tuition until they meet standards, or they will not be allowed to begin the course.
