The course is split into five sections:

1. Safeguarding Responsibilities

Safeguarding starts with you - the person who sees the child on a regular basis.

By creating a trusting relationship with a child, they’ll likely choose you to open up to and to trust with their hopes and fears.

But the responsibility doesn’t just lie with you, you have ample support around you and a crucial part of the safeguarding structure is communication between the various agencies.

There are several pieces of legislation that should be taken into account when the welfare of children is part of your legal safeguarding responsibility.  This section will take you through all the legislation you need to know including appointing a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) in your place of work.

2. Recognising Abuse in Children

In this section the course takes an in depth look at the common types of child abuse and the warnings that can suggest abuse is taking place.

3. Responding to Abuse

Recognising that a child is being abused, or is at risk of abuse, can be very upsetting and it may be tempting to avoid the issue or convince yourself you’re worrying over nothing.

But if your gut, your professional judgement or your common sense is telling you something isn’t right, it’s time to respond - and quickly.

In this section the course takes a look at what to do if a child makes a disclosure and you need to respond directly to them.

Remember to utilise your appointed DSL.  These are the people you should report to with any concerns you have for a child’s safety.  You can lean on them for all matters of safeguarding support.

4. Recording Observations

This section will take you through exactly how to record and what to record if your concerns are raised for a child’s safety or wellbeing whether that be following an incident, an event or a conversation.

5. Reporting Concerns

Reporting means notifying relevant individuals and agencies if you’re concerned for a child’s safety or wellbeing.  It runs alongside making a written record - but reporting may come first if the situation is urgent, or if your organisation’s safeguarding policy tells you to report it before you start a written record.  As a matter of course, this usually means reporting to a DSL and allowing them to take the next steps.  DSLs are responsible for making sure that safeguarding procedures are followed correctly, and they’re the ones that will make referrals to outside agencies, deal with the police, and have the necessary contact with a child’s parents or carers if it’s appropriate.

In this section, the course looks at why it’s crucial to report your concerns, and what individuals and agencies may be involved to safeguard a child.

Conclusion

On completion of this course you should feel confident at recognising the signs that something may not be right - whether it’s the poor mental health of a child or potential abuse.  You should also feel empowered to trust your gut and be confident to report your concerns if you have any.

This course takes approximately an hour to complete and finishes with a test to ensure that you have understood the content.
